Summer Reading

It’s cool to be a bookworm.

Our contributor Kelsay shares her favourite reads and places to curl up in the YYC!

Summer is just around the corner and there’s nothing I look forward to more than summer reading. Okay, that may be a blatant lie, but I do love having the time to read for pleasure. What do I suggest? Head down to your local bookstore (such as Pages in Kensington, or any Fair’s Fair location) and commit to a summer reading list!

The Must-Reads:

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green: I admit I have read this already, but I am reading it again. It was a truly moving novel with emotions that literally smear the page and leave you aching. A must read for the emotional human!

An Abundance of Katherines by John Green: Sorry that I am not sorry for loving teen novels…they are just too good.

If I Stay by Gayle Forman: This story is a tear-jerker. It’s making it to the big screen, too – so get your read on before you head out to see the movie!

Revenge Wears Prada by Lauren Weiserberger: Frick yeah, Miranda Priestly is back and as bad as ever. I had to read this Devil Wears Prada sequel, because that story was so instrumental in my youth. Well, not really – but it is a fun and easy read. Perfect for summer!

Favourite Calgary Reading Spots:

Starbucks in Kensington: The perfect place for a casual read, plus the people-watching is so captivating. It’s quieter than your typical Starbucks during the day, plus it has the Green-Tea Lemonade that we all know and love.

The Lazy-Boy in my living room: Dedicate a space for you in your home to read. If you choose that one spot to read and only read, it will alter the environment to automatically become your relaxation space. Kick up your feet!

Caffe Artigiano in the Shell building: It’s in a corporate building, so don’t try and read here during the lunch hour. It’s quiet for the rest of the day, and nearby if you work downtown. Also, it has the best cappuccino you’ve ever had. Seriously!

Deville in Arts Central: Deville knows their coffee and they offer up the best damn latte in town. Curl up with your drink in this café. It has a bit of a hipster vibe, but with a modern twist!

Vendome in Sunny Side: They serve alcohol here…who says you can’t read while sipping on a mimosa with breakfast? Perfect for a bright summer morning.
