The Father’s Day Date

Five date-with-dad ideas to make this Father’s Day one to remember.

Even though binging on the new season of Suits together sounds pretty tempting, we all know that those 12 hours of complete preoccupation could be put to better use. Here’s 5 different date-with-dad ideas that will get you out of the house to spend some quality time with Pa this year (no remote control required).

Brunch Around.
Nothing says “I love you, Pops” more than Eggs Benny with a side of bacon, and maybe – just maybe, a late morning bevvy. From The Beltliner to Red’s Diner, we’ve got the guide to The Best Brunch in Calgary so the whole fam can celebrate dad (and all his awkward ‘way back when’ stories) during everyone’s favourite meal of the day. Be the best offspring ever by grabbing a table early to avoid the extra-long Father’s Day line-ups.

Get Your Hike On.
If a stack of syrupy pancakes doesn’t suit your father’s fancy, a trip out to the wilderness certainly will. Reminisce about all those nostalgic ‘first times’ as you take in the stunning views around Bragg Creek’s Forget-Me-Not Pond, or traverse the Eau Claire Trail in Kananaskis Country. Even right here in YYC, you and dad can hike until your heart’s content in the Paskapoo Slopes of Canada Olympic Park or take a stroll through Nose Hill.

Hit the Green.
‘Tis the season for birdies, backswings, and showing the old man a thing or two out on the course. Whether you opt to play caddie for the day (fellow uncoordinated amateurs unite!), or have inherited those agile genes from dad, spending time out on the links makes for the ultimate Father’s Day. Check out a list of nearby courses, fees and booking information over here.

Do it Like the East Coasters Do.
Trade in the traditional backyard BBQ for a succulent lobster from Billingsgate, a bib and a side dish (permission to start drooling: granted) at this year’s Lobsterfest at Market on MacLeod. Presented in partnership with Branded Magazine, It’s Date Night and Village Brewery, this surf inspired bash will feature live tunes and a beer garden full of other dads showing each other how to master the ‘snorkel’.  Tickets are $25, with proceeds benefiting the Calgary Firefighters Burn Unit.

Head Down Memory Lane.
Maybe it’s an afternoon spent at Heritage Park, throwing a Frisbee around down at Prince’s Island or driving out to Cochrane for a few scoops at McKay’s – think about all the things you and pops used to do together back in the day, and go do them! Sometimes the littlest things can bear the most meaning, so have fun and get creative with your ‘throwback date’ with dad this year.
