Creative gift ideas based on Pop’s life teachings throughout the years.

Don’t get me wrong, golf balls and GCs make really great gifts for Father’s Day – but receiving the same thing for five years straight really takes the surprise out of that Sunday morning in June.  To help all my brothas and sistas out in their efforts to celebrate their old man’ this year, I’ve recalled the five major life lessons my own dad has taught me along the way, and all the creative prezzies that could complement his words of wisdom.

Even though you can drink 13 rum & cokes in one night, doesn’t mean you should.
Back in the days of sneaking sips out of the liquor cabinet in tenth grade, my friends and I may or may not have gone a little crazy with the Appleton Spiced Gold. To my repulse and to my dad’s delight, I had awoke out of my hungover slumber, to a glass full of the hair of the dog as retributive justice.  From that point forward, it’s safe to say I never touched a drop of rum, and I’ll be gifting my dad some glass tumblers to remind him of the sweet victory he relished in years ago.

How to master the perfect Kramer impersonation.
Sliding through doorways with a stunned face and a box of Junior Mints in-hand, home movie history has never seen such gold! Dig up old family tapes from your parent’s attic and have them transferred onto DVDs for Father’s Day, alongside of a few seasons of his favorite 90s sitcom of course!

The Barbecue is one of life’s most sacred treasures.
At my house, no one comes within a five-foot radius of the Broil King, and I’m pretty sure my dad showed more love to that grill last summer than he did to his own flesh & blood. From an apron that reads “I like big buns and I cannot lie” to a set of gourmet basting brushes, there are tons of gifts out there for The Grillfather in your life.

Red is the only colour to wear on game day.
From the Stamps in the Fall to the Flames in the Winter, pops always outfitted our whole family in red jerseys, ball caps, hoodies and yes – we even had onesies as babies – in honour of the glorious sports teams in this city. It didn’t matter if we were heading out to watch the game live or just huddling up in front of the TV together, our own little ‘C’ of red was always cheering on the home team. I haven’t decided if I’ll make a quilt out of all the MacDonald and Kipporsoff gems that are hung in our closet, or just grab a pair of tickets to the season opener, but I know he’ll be pretty thrilled either way.

Nothing can fix your problems quite like the sweet smell of bacon.
Waking up to the scent of those sizzling strips of pork will forever remind us of dad and his homemade breakfasts that were out of this world. We don’t really have much convincing to do on this one, because, well – bacon. Pick up Pops a pound of this favourite Sunday morning delicacy and take him out for brunch this Father’s Day.
