Sleepless in YYC

An after midnight to-do list for when you don't want your date to end.

Written By: Tomi Ajele

Your date doesn’t need to end with “Wanna go back to my place?”

Imagine you’re on a date and it’s perfect. In fact, imagine you’re on the best first date of your life. Was it dinner and a movie? Cooking classes? Appetizers and a live show? Regardless of what you did, I bet the date was over by 12 a.m., or 1 a.m. at the latest.

Why? Because, if you’re not going back to his/her place, and you’re not particularly ready to hit the club, then the date has to end sometime…doesn’t it?

Next time you experience the best date of your life and things are going so smashingly that you’re not ready to end the evening – don’t! Here are some ways you can draw out your best-date-ever well into the night.

Part 1: The Walk.

It’s easy and you can do it anywhere, literally. There are few things more romantic yet more effortless than a walk, and if it’s a walk that happens to be a midnight stroll, well then that’s even more romantic.

Downtown Calgary is a grand display of colorful lights at night. From the illuminating Calgary Tower to the myriad of colours showcased on benches and on bridges, there is certainly no shortage of beauty in this city after sundown. AKA you get various perfect make-out spots.

Here are a few romantic stroll ideas:

Head to Memorial Drive and 1 Ave NW and enjoy a beautifully lit walk along the Peace Bridge and down the bow river. Or for a little more privacy, cross the St. Patrick’s bridge in East Village to the brand new St. Patrick’s Island Park. A walk through this park at 1 or 2 in the morning is perfectly isolated as there is not a car to be heard or a traffic light to be seen. (Again, make-out all you want.) The park also has a small hill, atop which you can take in the sparkly light show that is Downtown Calgary and East Village.

Part 2: Late Night Eats.

Pizza lovers rejoice. Posto Pizzeria & Bar on 8th Street SW offers everything on the menu and all bottles of wine for half price after 10pm. The restaurant has an incredibly large menu, friendly staff, and a plethora of mouthwatering pizza for you to choose from.

For a more romantic dining experience, head over to Wine Bar Kensington on Kensington Rd. Open till 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and a mere 10-minute walk from the Peace Bridge, Wine Bar delivers a classy experience of top-notch wine and food.

YYC continues to blossom and grow into a city full of beautiful places to connect. “Wanna go back to my place?” is no longer the only alternative to ending date night, so next time you can tell that neither of you are willing to call it a night, you don’t have to.
