A Canadian charity is marking a major milestone this fall, and Toronto is coming together to celebrate a decade of impact.

Shelter Movers is celebrating its 10th anniversary after completing more than 10,000 moves for survivors of gender-based violence and their families across Canada since 2016.

To mark the milestone, the organization is bringing its annual A Moving Affair gala back to Toronto on Friday, November 6, with an evening dedicated to celebrating the survivors, volunteers and supporters behind its work.

A Decade of Helping Survivors Move to Safety

Shelter Movers provides free moving and secure storage services to survivors of gender-based violence, helping remove some of the financial and logistical barriers that can make leaving an unsafe situation even more difficult.

What began as a grassroots initiative in 2016 has since grown into a national organization operating across the Maritimes, Greater Toronto, Ottawa, Southwestern Ontario and Vancouver.

In 2025 alone, Shelter Movers completed more than 1,600 moves.

According to the organization, 63 percent of the survivors it has supported over the past decade said they would have been forced into debt to pay for their own move without its help. Another 93 percent reported feeling safe and supported throughout the moving process.

More than 360 active volunteers across Canada currently help make those moves possible.

A Moving Affair Returns This November

The organization’s milestone year will be celebrated at A Moving Affair on Friday, November 6, 2026, at The Ritz-Carlton, Toronto.

The annual gala will bring together survivors, supporters, volunteers and corporate partners for an evening reflecting on Shelter Movers‘ first decade and raising money for its work across Canada.

Guests can expect a three-course dinner, curated auction, live entertainment and storytelling highlighting the experiences and resilience of survivors.

All proceeds from the evening will support Shelter Movers‘ national operations.

When: Friday, November 6, 2026

Where: The Ritz-Carlton, Toronto

Looking Ahead to the Next Decade

While 10,000 moves is a major milestone, Shelter Movers says its work is far from finished as demand for its services continues.

“As we mark 10 years of Shelter Movers, I think back to that very first call and the belief that something had to change,” Vicky Sage, Chief Operating Officer of Shelter Movers, said in a press release.

“What started as a small, grassroots response has grown into a national movement, supporting thousands of survivors and their families.”

As Shelter Movers enters its next decade, A Moving Affair offers Torontonians a chance to recognize the people behind that work while supporting the organization’s continued efforts to help survivors move toward safety.
