Each and every month we celebrate, support, and recognize Black excellence throughout our local communities and beyond. In 2024, the official Black Month theme in Canada is Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate; a Future to Build. No matter where you live, Black History Month sets aside a dedicated time to globally recognize and honour the oftentimes overlooked contributions and achievements of Black individuals and their communities.

In Edmonton, there’s events that range from focusing on education, arts and culture, dining, and more!

Edmonton Public Library

Happening all month at Edmonton Public Library (all locations)

Join the Edmonton Public Library as they kick off Black History Month with a month-long celebration featuring various virtual events, including discussions, performances, and film screenings. From exploring the history of Black Canadians to highlighting contemporary achievements, this celebration offers something for everyone to learn and appreciate.

5A1L Black History Month Art Show

January 28 – April 04 Alberta Art Gallery (2 Sir Winston Churchill Sq,)

 5 Artists 1 Love is an annual exhibition celebrating the vibrant creativity of local Black artists at the Art Gallery of Alberta. From paintings to sculptures, this exhibition celebrates the diverse talents and perspectives within the Black artistic community.

WAWT Black History Month Gala 2024

February 10 6:00-11:30pm at The Westin Edmonton (10135 100 Street NW)

Hosted by “When African Women Talk”, The Black History Month Gala is an amazing celebration of Black excellence, resistance, resilience, and activism. Witness speakers discuss the historical and ongoing struggles, achievements, and contributions of Black individuals and communities. Don’t miss this opportunity to honour the movements, leaders, and events that have shaped Black history.

Feed the Soul Dining Week

February 02 – 11 at various restaurants

Feed The Soul Dining Week was created to showcase the city’s diverse Black-owned food scene; highlighting the positive influence the African Diaspora has on the local hospitality industry.

Featuring 13 Black-owned restaurants, food retailers and makers in Edmonton. You won’t want to miss out on the bold and flavour-packed traditional menu offerings!

BLC: EVOLVE Cultural Summit

Black Literacy Code proudly presents the Evolve Cultural Summit. Dive into a series of interactive workshops designed to immerse you in the richness of black culture. From literature to arts, these sessions are perfect for anyone eager to learn, appreciate, and contribute to the cultural dialogue.
