This month, Toronto is honouring and celebrate Black History Month. From cultural exhibits to lively performances, the city is hosting a variety of events that pay tribute to the rich and diverse contributions of the African American community.

While February is set aside a dedicated time to globally recognize, we must strive to always incorporate and acknowledge the fact that Black culture and history has influenced every aspect of our current society and culture here in Toronto.

Check out these Black History Month events taking place around Toronto to mix entertainment and fun with always-needed and appreciated education.

Trivia game nights

Toronto Black Film Festival 

February 14–19, 2024 at various venues


The Toronto Black Film Festival is a platform for distinctive voices in cinema, offering audiences fresh perspectives on the world. It’s a vibrant, bold festival with the mission to foster the growth of the independent film sector and showcase more films depicting the diverse realities of Black communities worldwide. They’re offering an electrifying series of soulful sounds and spoken word magic.

Black Diamond Ball

February 24, 2024 at Fairmont Royal York Hotel

Black Diamond Ball is a tribute to black culture, highlighting artists, empowering black youth, and promoting black-owned businesses nationwide. This annual event unites the community and its allies to commemorate Black History Month and celebrate community achievements. Through awards recognizing youth and community leaders, this will be a vibrant marketplace featuring local businesses, a celebrity gifting lounge, and a stage for emerging and professional artists.

KUUMBA

February 1–29, 2024 at The Harbourfront Centre

KUUMBA is Toronto’s largest and longest running Black Futures Month festival integrating music, theatre, spoken word, dance and visual arts. This vibrant celebration showcases the diverse and creative tapestry of Afro-Canadian culture through a month-long series of cultural events and programming.

Movie Screening: Black Panther

February 23, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Ellesmere Community Centre


Join at the Ellesmere Community Centre for a screening of the Academy Award-winning film, Black Panther.

Black Defenders of Upper Canada Tour

February 1 to 29, hourly during opening hours at Fort York National Historic Site


Embark on a guided tour of Fort York National Historic Site to uncover the invaluable contributions of Richard Pierpoint and the Coloured Corps during the War of 1812. Explore the ties to the African Diaspora by delving into the ingredients utilized in the site’s historic kitchen.

The Trending Table

February 24-25, 2024, at Stackt Market

Celebrate Black History Month with The Trending Table as they host a pop-up market at Stackt Market spotlighting local black-owned businesses. There will be a weekend filled with shopping, networking, and supporting small black-owned businesses in the community. The first 30 guests will receive a swag bag filled with goodies! Don’t miss this opportunity to meet and support talented local black entrepreneurs!
