Halifax has one of the most thriving culinary scenes in Canada. Year after year, this city continues to impress with new restaurants offering delicious menu options. Budapest Bisztro is one of those newly-opened restaurants creating buzz with their traditional and innovative cuisine from Eastern Europe.
Jan Wicha and his family opened Budapest Bisztro at the end of 2019 and are bringing the flavours, spirit, and ingredients of Eastern Europe all the way to Halifax. Since they’ve opened, customers have been raving about their flavourful dishes including Chicken Paprikash, Latkes, and their Budapest Schnitzel to name only a few. Their cozy and comforting offerings are exactly what we need while in lockdown. This local bistro is truly a one-of-a-kind spot for your next date night.
Located on Washmill Lake Dr, Budapest Bisztro is situated below Six Fifty North Apartments and overlooks Mount Royale Park. The space itself is beautiful, elegantly-decorated, and bright with wooden countertops, greenery, and gold accents everywhere. They also have a spacious outdoor patio in the back with sparkling string lights, candles, and shaded umbrellas for those hot summer days.
We tried the Hearty Goulash Soup and Latkes with Atlantic Smoked Salmon as appetizers for a takeout dinner and were instantly impressed. For our main courses, we had the Not-Your-Momma’s-Pierogies and Stroganoff Alla Kiev which were equally delicious. And for the perfect finale, we indulged in the Dobos Torte, a traditional Hungarian sponge cake layered with chocolate buttercream and topped with caramel.
We also indulged in Josephina’s Strudel stuffed with golden raisins and local Gala apples. Although these dishes are among the most popular on the menu, the Wicha family also recommends trying some of their personal favourites including the Broiled Brown Butter Trout and the Roasted Stuffed Peppers. They also update their menu every 6 months to offer new and exciting dishes for customers.
We can’t wait to return to Budapest Bisztro to enjoy more of this incredible local restaurant’s offerings. There is even talk of adding a projector and screen on their patio for the EuroCup this summer — SO fun! The restaurant’s team is very excited to welcome back their customers safely for in-person dining soon.
