Halifax Desserts

If you ask us, date night is not complete without something sweet! Luckily, we live in a city that is flourishing with some of the best homemade desserts from French pastries to slow-churned ice cream to decadent cheesecake.

Here is your guide to 10 must-try dessert spots to visit for your next date night!

1. Sweet Hereafter Cheesecake

This Quinpool shop offers artisanal cheesecake in a variety of flavours that are updated each day. Indulge in Strawberry Shortcake, Vegan/GF Chocolate Amaretto or Classic New York. They are currently only open for takeout but we recommend ordering some cheesecake slices to go, lighting a couple candles, and having a romantic date night at home.

2. Humani-T Cafe

This local cafe has two locations in the Hydrostone area as well as the South End, and their house-made gelato is a must-try! This is a super cute spot featuring local artwork, espresso drinks and cozy vibes – perfect for an afternoon coffee date.

3. The Bread Lounge Bakery

Give your taste buds a treat at this local bakery! Stop by on an afternoon stroll in Halifax’s Hydrostone area and enjoy scrumptious baked goods and coffee. We recommend trying their Chocolate Danish!

4. COWS Ice Cream

Originating in Prince Edward Island, this old-fashioned premium ice cream shop has seasonal locations on the Halifax Waterfront and in Larry Uteck. Their ice cream is made of the highest quality ingredients, including 16% butterfat. Grab a waffle cone and take a stroll along the picturesque Halifax Waterfront Boardwalk for the perfect summer date.

5. Booza Emessa

This local ice cream parlour serves up homemade Syrian ice cream and sweets. All of their ice-cream is gluten-free plus there’s dairy-free and vegan options available as well!

6. Julien’s Patisserie, Bakery & Cafe

If you’ve never had a canelé from Julien’s, you’re missing out! This French pastry is a favourite among customers and highly recommended for your next coffee date.

7. DeeDee’s Ice Cream

This fan-favourite Haligonian ice cream parlour is known for being the best in the city! This family-run business first offered their ice cream in Peggy’s Cove and now operates a cafe in Halifax’s North End. Their ice cream is made in small batches using milk and cream from local dairies, organic cane sugar and only real fruits, nuts, and flavourings whenever possible.

8. Le French Fix Pâtisserie

Transport your date to Paris, no passport required! This local pastry shop is known for their French macarons, specialty espresso drinks, and flans.

9. The Middle Spoon Desserterie & Bar

This is the absolute go-to dessert spot for Haligonians! Open late into the night, this dessert and cocktail bar offers fresh desserts made daily, from scratch, with love. Their cocktails are made with the same approach with freshly-squeezed juices, fresh herbs and homemade syrups. It’s a place that you and your date will want to stay at for hours and up until last call.

10. Taiyaki 52

This local restaurant specializes in Taiyakis – traditional Japanese desserts that resemble a Western waffle or pancake. They come in a variety of different filling flavours including traditional red bean, vanilla custard and hazelnut chocolate. We recommend trying the Jaw Dropper – soft-serve ice cream in a crunchy taiyaki waffle cone, decorated with fruity corn puffs, pocky sticks and sprinkles!
