Edmonton’s dining scene just hit a new high with the opening of MSSM, an omakase experience that’s already making waves. Across the street from the JW Marriott Edmonton Ice District, you’ll find a sushi bar with only 20 seats offering a fresh twist on traditional Edomae sushi, blending the finest Japanese techniques with local and European ingredients.
The concept was created by two-star Michelin Chef Masaki Saito, bringing his visionary approach to our city.
This is more than just a meal; it’s an experience you’ll be craving again and again making it the hottest spot for date night.
Vision and History
If you haven’t heard of Chef Saito, let me fill you in. He’s a culinary artist, renowned for his precision, creativity, and a deep respect for traditional Japanese techniques, all while adding his own modern twist. He is Canada’s first and only 2 Michelin Star Sushi Chef. His original restaurant: Sushi Masaki Saito is located in Toronto.
Given the high price point at Sushi Masaki Saito and the limited seating, many individuals don’t get the opportunity to experience a traditional Edomae offering, explains Chef Saito. While he has enjoyed sharing his passion and knowledge with select customers, this approach hasn’t allowed him to broadly educate the general public. This is why he created MSSM—to make the experience more accessible while maintaining the integrity and artistry of Edomae sushi.
Menu
The menu? A constantly evolving selection of sushi and other Japanese delights, with each piece more exquisite than the last. MSSM’s 14-course menu is crafted to perfection, and at a price point of $98, it’s far more accessible than other omakase experiences in the city, which are typically priced at $170+. The experience is curated by Chef Saito and brought to life by his apprentices.
Omakase Etiquette
Before diving into your omakase experience, it’s helpful to know a few key points of etiquette that can elevate your meal from good to unforgettable. Here’s a quick guide to ensure you’re dining like a pro!
Trust the Chef: Omakase means “I’ll leave it up to you.” Sit back and let the chef guide your culinary journey.
Be Punctual: Arriving on time ensures you experience the meal as intended, with every course served at its peak.
Respect the Pace: Eat each piece as soon as it’s served. Sushi is best enjoyed fresh and at the right temperature.
