With the New Year right around the corner, it’s time to start making your 2019 resolutions! Often you hear grand intentions like, “I will not drink alcohol for a year” or “I will work out every single day of 2019.” Whether you’re the person making the resolution or listening to your friend make this nearly impossible vow, you both know that it will inevitably be broken. Instead of making a huge promise that you know you can’t keep, try making your resolutions realistic and based on improvement from last year. When it comes to your relationship, the same applies.

Relationships are always tough, whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been together for years. Learning the ins and outs of another person is always exciting but it takes time. It’s easy to slip into a comfortable pattern where you both forget about trying new things or stop sharing responsibilities equally. This year, we challenge you to break free from that comfortable relationship ‘rut-tine’ and shake things up with your partner. Whether you try something new once a week or once a month, that’s up to you! Here are some ways to spice things up with your date and keep things running smoothly in 2019:

Try a New Restaurant

We are so fortunate to live in a city where new restaurants are constantly popping up around every corner, so take the time to explore your options. Chinese, Greek, Indian, Italian – anything you’re craving, there’s guaranteed to be an option close by. We know this can get expensive, so that’s why you only go once a week or once a month – whatever your budget allows. There are also TONS of happy hour deals and specials happening around the city every day, some even into the evening so you can go after work. Every Tuesday, Native Tongues has $2.50 tacos all day long – YUM.

Make a Cleaning Schedule

This may not be the sexiest way to spice up a relationship, but chores are an age-old argument between couples. We all know the feeling of a one-sided relationship when you’re the only one cleaning the bathroom, so take the time to make a schedule and share the tasks that may not be everyone’s favourite. Maybe each of you loves a particular chore so you take it on full-time, or perhaps you split everything evenly – one week on, one week off. Find something that works for you, and don’t be afraid to switch it up if it’s not working!

Split Cooking Meals

Cooking is time-consuming – no secret’s here. First, you have to plan the meals, then you go shop for them, you finally get to cooking them, only to be left with a pile of dishes to clean up afterwards. However, cooking at home regularly is a great way to save money and try your hand at whipping up new dishes. Try splitting days so that you don’t have to cook every day, or perhaps splitting tasks so you do the cooking but your partner does the shopping. Do whatever you can to help make things easier and split up this time-consuming but deliciously worthwhile task – your bank account and your sanity will thank you.

Organize Your Finances

Did you know that money is one of the most commons topics that couples fight about? It’s easy to feel like you’re spending more than the other person or that your partner only wants to do expensive activities that you can’t afford. It’s important to talk and be open about your financial status and your future goals so that you’re on the same page. Some couples like to split the bill when they go out, others take turns paying. If you really like to keep track, make a spreadsheet of joint expenses and tally them up at the end of each month. This way, large expenses don’t go by unnoticed and bills are split evenly between the couple.

Go on More Dates

Sounds simple right? Or some would “say sounds expensive.” However, it doesn’t have to be. Sure you can go for the 5-star dinner and fancy cocktails but dates don’t have to be all about money; they should be about spending time with your partner. Brew some hot chocolate, buddle up and walk around Prince’s Island Park for a cheap date – if you go at night, the view of downtown is quite spectacular. Perhaps you’re a more active couple. The Outdoor Centre at the University of Calgary rents all kinds of winter sporting gear at very affordable prices – why not try snowshoeing around Fish Creek Park or cross-country skiing at Bragg Creek? Your date options in Calgary are endless – don’t let money scare you away from spending a night out with your partner.
