August already – where has the summer gone?! Don’t worry, there’s still plenty of time to hit the beach, go for ice cream, barbecue in the backyard and enjoy your favourite patio drinks. However, there’s one thing that all of these activities, as fun as they can be, have in common: limited physical activity. Summer is arguably the most popular season, but we tend to indulge in rich foods and sweet drinks that come along with the warm weather. So yes, there is still a month of summer left for you to enjoy, but the Calgary Sport and Social Club (CSSC) is ready for you to register into their Fall Leagues.

Established in 1996, the CSSC has been bringing together amateur, sportsmanlike athletes from across the city for over twenty years. No matter your age, height, weight, gender or sport of preference, the CSSC welcomes people from all walks of life to engage in friendly competitive and non-competitive leagues and tournaments throughout all months of the year. Whether you want to commit to one day or several months, play on a team or fly solo, there truly is something here for everyone. With over fifteen sports to choose from and 4,500 teams participating in CSSC sports each year, you could say that this is a popular pastime.

Fall League registration recently opened on July 24. Dodgeball, curling, volleyball, four types of soccer – the options are endless! Next time you’re sitting on the beach or camped out around the fire, chat with your pals about which sport you’re going to take on next. For Fall Leagues 2019, here’s what you need to know:

  • Fall Registration Opens: July 24
  • Earlybird Deadline: August 16
  • Fall Outdoor Registration Deadline: August 28
  • Fall Outdoor Season Begins: September 6
  • Fall Indoor Registration Deadline: September 11
  • Fall Indoor Season Begins: September 22

Now, we all know that some people grew up playing sports in school and some didn’t – that’s ok! We hear a lot of people say “I suck at sports” or “I don’t know how to play spikeball.” This is exactly why the CSSC exists here in Calgary. Recreational sports are all about learning the rules and having fun while playing the game and meeting new people. Competitive or not, the CSSC promotes a ‘fun-first, winning-second’ attitude that keeps games light and fun throughout the year. Each sport has multiple skill levels available so that you can join in with like-minded and like-skilled players.

“Well, I’m kinda interested, but none of my friends want to commit.”

Do you want to know the best part about the CSSC? You don’t have to do it alone! Sign-up with your pals and create a team or register by yourself and they will pair you up with a group of individuals just like you – at your skill level, just looking to have a good time. Last season, there were 650 ‘individuals’ playing in CSSC leagues so you’ll be in good company.

“This sounds really fun, but I’m not available for the whole season.”

Whether you’re new to sports, you’re a little nervous or you’re a busy-bee with a hectic schedule, the CSSC hosts tournaments and drop-in nights for those not able to join for a full season. For upcoming tournaments in the next month, take your pick between beach volleyball, slo-pitch, spikeball or yard games – their tournaments include music, beer gardens, lots of laughs and good times all around. Perhaps you’re craving sand beneath your feet – drop-in and use the beach volleyball courts on Friday evenings until September 6 for only $10/person with the exception of August 30 (all proceeds are donated to charity and students play for free).

If you’re not ready to commit just yet, no problem. You still have until August 28 to register for outdoor sports and September 11 to register for indoor sports. So, start that group chat or set a reminder on your phone to see what sport you and your friends are going to attempt next.

There’s truly something here for everyone at the CSSC – if you don’t believe us, take a look for yourself. Learn more about Fall Leagues here.
