Brunch is a sacred experience. From a mimosa-fuelled girls’ day, to the ultimate hangover cure and everything in between, it’s arguably the most delicious meal of the day, and definitely the best weekend date activity. We recently had the opportunity to visit Sensei Bar for the launch of their brand new brunch menu, and if you like boozy cocktails with delightfully crispy waffles, this is the spot for your next brunch date in Calgary.
Sensei Bar just opened this summer, and there has been a buzz surrounding the name ever since. The beautiful space is inviting and reflects well the vibe of the experience and the food you’re about to try; funky, refined and flavourful.
Sake-mosas anyone?
Now, we’ve all heard of sake bombs, but sake-mosas? These drinks are light and refreshing, and the perfect accompaniment to a delicious meal. We tried the Mandarin Orange, as well as the Rose Petal Sake flavour, and although both were absolutely delightful, our collective favourite was definitely the rose petal!
Scallion Pancake Omelets
This magical dish is the Lobster and Scallop Scallion Pancake Omelet. It’s essentially a fluffy omelet with fresh Atlantic lobster, wrapped in a crispy and flavourful scallion pancake, covered in a butter chive hollandaise, and then topped with perfectly seared scallops and frisée lettuce.
Real talk – this menu item was insanely good. Insanely. Good. If you are a seafood fan, this is it. No need to keep reading.
(But definitely do, because there are more delicious details below)
Crispy, Fluffy, Delicious, WAFFLES
Now for all you who love a sweet breakfast item, and for those who prefer savoury – do not sleep on these waffles. You can order them by the piece, so they can be the perfect side to your savoury main, or shareable (if you dare).
These Belgian Liege Waffles are seriously incredibly – somehow they are perfectly crispy on the outside, unimaginably fluffy on the inside. They truly are Belgian-style – with a subtly sweet flavour and crunchy sugar pearls throughout.
Now for the dips. Don’t miss out on adding these dips to your order. You can choose between four different dips, including a matcha white chocolate (our personal fave), mango coconut, ginger orange chocolate and a spiced blueberry compote. Whether you dip away, or order the waffles on their own, you can’t go wrong.
Duck Duck, Waffles
This menu item, the Duck & Waffles was our favourite of the morning. Yes, we are obsessed with the waffles, and those scallion pancakes are *chef’s kiss*, but this one stood out just a smidge, and will likely be our first re-order on our next visit. With a side of extra waffles, obvi.
Right between the infamous waffles and the shaoixing hollandaise, is the duck confit- glazed with a cherry hoisin and tossed with candied pearl onions and dried tomatoes. It’s delightfully rich, sweet, salty and filling, and the butter lettuce salad with the gochujang dressing is the perfect partner for that punch of spice, salt and freshness.
These are just a few of the amazing items on the Sensei Bar Bruch menu, but all we know, is it’s definitely our new fave spot for brunch dates in Calgary. We’ll see you there!
