We are close to the mountains, we have an exciting restaurant scene, and during the summer, our parks are lively and rivers full during the Summer, but we lack a nearby wine country. And while the treacherous winters of the foothills keep us from growing plump grapes, our friends at City & Country Winery have made magic by bringing us with Calgary’s first and only urban winery. We recently visited for a girls date, and found that it was an unassuming and delightful datenight for wine lovers in Calgary!
Their motto is; Just Wine. Nothing Else. And for a good reason! Their tasty wines, made in house, are fully vegan, gluten free, and contain no added colour, flavouring or sugars.
The Venue
City & Country Winery is located in the Barley Belt, so it’s the perfect stop for anyone who frequents the nearby breweries, but looking for a different experience. It’s a lovely venue, bright and open, with tons of seating, including their stunning bar. If you are interested in the winemaking process, you can even peek into the back of the building to see all of the equipment that makes the magic happen. The tasting room also features work from local artists!
The team, including of course the founder and winemaker, Chris Fodor, is incredibly passionate about the product they create, and you can tell from the moment you step foot in the venue!
Wine & Charcuterie
The best way to sample the wines is to enjoy a flight! You can enjoy one, two or six wines! As many as you like to try to get the full scope of the wines that City & Country create.
We sampled the 2020 Fumé Blanc with grapes from Niagra-On-The-Lake, the 2020 Zinfandel Rose with with grapes from Central Valley, California, as well as the unique 2019 Gamay Noir from Oliver, BC.
Each wine was delicious, had a fresh flavour profile, and paired very well with the tasty, hearty charcuterie board that they offer for all those looking to add some snacks to datenight.
City & Country truly is an exception datenight for wine lovers in Calgary!
