A new year always brings fresh starts, and Toronto’s food and drink scene is kicking things off strong. From buzzy restaurant debuts to long-awaited re-openings, these are some of the new bars and restaurants opening in 2026 that are already on our date ideas list.

Proper

Opened: January 7th, 2026

Now open in the Roncesvalles space formerly home to La Cubana, Proper is bringing the energy of Toronto’s most iconic neighbourhoods (Dundas, King, Queen, & Ossington) to the heart of Roncy. Led by Chef Julien Cawagas, the restaurant draws inspiration from the “effortless cool of New York Italian cooking,” making everything from scratch (i.e. the Proper way). The result is a lively neighbourhood spot where generous plates, good music, and warm, attentive hospitality come together — the kind of place designed to reflect its community and make you want to stay a little longer.

Shay

Opening: TBD

Located a short walk away from Summerhill station, Shay is slated to open later this year and will mark the first solo venture from Justin Friedlich, former chef de cuisine at Buca Yorkville. While most details remain under wraps, the Rosedale Italian-inspired restaurant and wine bar is named after his daughter so we know this ne is gonna be personal, making it a promising pick for an intimate date night.

Brasserie Côte

Opening: TBD

Opening in the Annex, Brasserie Côte is the newest addition from the team behind Côte de Boeuf and Union Restaurant. Designed to capture the relaxed, timeless feel of a classic French brasserie, the space will balance familiarity with approachability. Diners can expect Côte de Boeuf favourites alongside a broader, all-day menu that extends beyond dinner to include breakfast and lunch — making it a spot meant for both casual drop-ins and lingering meals.

Notte Ristorante

Opened: Jan 10th, 2026

Coming to the St. Lawrence Market district this January, Notte Ristorante marks the evolution of Amano Trattoria and Bar Notte under Executive Chef Michael Angeloni. Designed around the natural rhythm of a night out, the modern Italian bar and restaurant moves easily from aperitivo and happy hour into a lively dinner scene. Notte’s menu draws inspiration from regions across Italy, with from-scratch pastas, 72-hour Roman-style pizzas, and generous share plates meant for lingering, all paired with a welcoming atmosphere that encourages guests to settle in, order another round, and enjoy the night without overthinking.
