What’s Up This Weekend

sabrina!

This Leap Year weekend, YYC’s Art scene is totally bumping — or should we day leaping? — with a bunch of hype multimedia showcases for you and your date to immerse yourselves in. From free exhibits by local artists, to electric K-Pop clubbing and afro-caribbean art installations at the Central Library, there are a ton of extremely affordable and majorly cool ways to switch up your dates! Ditch the dinner-and-a-movie routine and get some feel a hardcore artsy vibe with bae this weekend.

MUSIC FOR PHDS ART SHOW

On Friday, Feb. 28th, local YYC painter Sunita LeGallou is exhibiting her otherworldly beautiful paintings at Two House Brewing Co. Sunita’s artwork is a part of her new podcast Music for PhDs, which explores the scientific relationship between the mind, body and of course, music! This FREE event is the ideal way to dress up a Friday night and rock that chic outfit you’ve been waiting to wear and learn a ton of cool new things!

K-POP CLUB NIGHT AT THE REC ROOM

Whether you’re an outright, loud and proud K-Pop fan or would rather binge on this insanely addictive genre BTS (get it?), The Rec Room is serving some hard core K-Pop realness this Friday, Feb. 28th at 10pm! Special guest DJ Keely Valentine from the 6 will be dropping some sick beats and lighting up the space with K-Pop music videos playing — and the real kick is that her set will be ENTIRELY by request, giving you and your date the chance to actualize your K-Pop dream! This K-Pop party’s going to be popping, K?

MESMERICA 360: A VISUAL MUSIC JOURNEY

Not to be confused with Ms. ‘Merica, Mesmerica at Telus Spark is a captivating exhibit of fantastical imagery designed to activate the mind and senses in a soothing way. Vortex Immersion Media has forged a dream team with Grammy-nominated composer James Hood to create an ethereal, meditative sensory experience to get lost in. This Saturday, Feb. 29th, grab your bae and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday city life in this magical and rejuvenating visual journey.

ETHNIK FESTIVAL OF ARTS AND CULTURE

February has the honour of being Black History Month and Ethnik Festival is the perfect way to take in the final days of the celebration! Taking place at the gorg Central Library downtown, the day will feature AMAZING afro-caribbean choreography by YYC sensation Sabrina Naz as pictured in the STUNNING red ensemble above — definitely check out her IG @hernameisnaz to see the personality, originality and artistic process that she puts into her work! There will also be electric poetry by Wakefield Brewster and a star-studded guest speakers panel ft. R&B icon Jully Black. Lucky for YYC, this powerful showcase of talent is FREE to attend (unreal!) and takes place Fri–Sat, Feb. 28th to 29th from 2–8pm. That is plenty of opportunity to join the excitement!

MOUNTAIN SIDE PROPOSALS AT SUNSHINE VILLAGE

The beautiful Sunshine Village Ski Resort hosts a special tradition on Feb 29th every Leap Year where  women deliver a special proposal to their partners right on the mountain side. This event comes only once every four years so be sure to take advantage of the fun, the novelty and of course the snowy hills before Spring takes over full force!
