If you are planning a proposal, the setting you choose can completely shape the moment. Around the world, some locations consistently stand out because they offer the right mix of romance, atmosphere, and emotional impact.

While the official “proposals season” is considered to be winter, statistics also show that jewellers see a 38% search volume spike in April in anticipation of proposals during the spring. With this in mind, Dawsons Auctioneers set out to find out the most popular engagement locations and destinations, surprisingly revealing that location to be at home, followed closely by classic outdoor locations like a park and the beach.

Below are the most popular places to propose, ranked from classic destination-style settings to the most personal and intimate option.

#10. At a hotel

Hotel proposals (1.30%) are popular because they combine privacy, comfort, and luxury in one setting. A well-designed suite, a balcony view, or even a rooftop space can instantly elevate the experience.

Additionally, hotels often offer proposal packages or customizable setups, which makes planning easier. Because of this, hotel proposals are ideal for couples who want something polished, intimate, and stress-free.

#9. At a waterfall

Waterfall proposals (1.30%) feel naturally cinematic. The movement of the water, the surrounding nature, and the sound all add depth and emotion to the moment.

In addition, waterfalls often feel like hidden escapes, even when they are well-known. As a result, this type of proposal is perfect for couples who want something dramatic and visually unforgettable.

#8. A local monument or landmark

Landmarks are a popular choice (1.50%) because they carry meaning beyond the couple. Whether it is historical, cultural, or symbolic, the setting adds significance to the proposal.

Moreover, these locations are often visually striking, which makes them ideal for capturing the moment. Because of this, they remain a timeless and recognizable option.

#7. At the lake

Lake proposals (2.40%) are known for their calm and peaceful atmosphere. The still water creates a soft, reflective backdrop that naturally feels romantic.

Additionally, lakes offer space and quiet, especially during early mornings or sunset. As a result, they are ideal for couples who want something simple, scenic, and intimate.

#6. On a hiking trail

Hiking trail proposals (3.80%) are built around shared experience and effort. Reaching a viewpoint together adds meaning and a sense of accomplishment to the moment.

In addition, trails often lead to scenic overlooks or hidden spots that feel private and rewarding. Because of this, they are perfect for couples who connect through adventure and nature.

#5. In the mountains

The fifth most common place people pop the question is in the mountains (3.9%), a perfect location for outdoorsy couples that love nature. Just like the beach, the mountain provides a beautiful view to go along with the proposal, with the added benefit of almost total privacy while remaining outdoors.

#4. At a restaurant

Next is restaurants (5.6%), by far the most public way of proposing out of the top 10 locations. While restaurant proposals remain somewhat popular, the added pressure of both asking and answering such an important question in public can be nerve wracking for everyone involved.

There are also many things you don’t have control over, and the small but constant risk of being upstaged by a different proposal altogether.

#3. At the beach

The third most common place people chose to get down on one knee is at the beach (12.4%). Proposing on holiday can be a great idea, especially for people with an intense or stressful day to day life.

Being relaxed and knowing there aren’t any emails or reports to send by the end of the day can do wonders for your nerves, all while providing an extremely photogenic setting to ask for your partner’s hand in marriage. Beach proposals are timeless because of their natural beauty and relaxed setting. The sound of the waves and the open horizon create a calming and emotional atmosphere.

#2. Outdoors, in a local park or garden

The second most common place for people to propose is a park or a garden (18.4%). While a lot more public than popping the question in one’s lounge, doing it in a large open space can still be made to feel intimate with enough preparation and foresight.

They offer greenery, flowers, and open space without requiring travel or complex planning.

#1. At home

Dawsons Auctioneers found that while social media loves a dramatic proposal at an iconic landmark, the majority of people (23.7%) pop the question indoors within the comfort of their own home. For many, proposals aren’t about a grandstanding public performance, but rather about putting intimacy and comfort first, relieving pressure off of both parties and creating a moment in the home they might share for the rest of their lives.

If you are still deciding, consider pairing your proposal with a meaningful activity or place that already matters to both of you. This adds another layer of intention to the moment.
