Want to increase your chances of another date? Take your beau on a roller coaster. Or a zipline. Or a horror movie. Read on for why extreme dates are a good idea (and why BC is the perfect place to plan them).
We’re not kidding. We spend most of our time trying to impress our dates. Whether it’s our first date or our 30th date, the pressure to plan something straight out of a romance novel is pretty intense. But what if we told you that you can level up your dating game by introducing some extreme sports, horror movies, or even just some heights?
The science proves it. Situations that induce fear are actually more likely to provoke an intense attraction to the partner at the scene. Adrenaline, arousal, and attraction go hand-in-hand. According to this article in Medium, “Put simply, fear is accompanied by arousal, and arousal facilitates attraction.” Bingo.
And BC has no shortage of high-octane activities. If you’re in the Interior, take your lover-to-be to Oyama Zipline park or hit the slopes of Big White for a snowboarding or Mountain biking trip (obviously seasonally dependent).
If you’re in the lower mainland, you might find that Superfly ziplines in Whistler, or Grouse mountain ziplines are just scary enough to induce some attraction, but not so terrifying that your date leaves in tears. Cruising through Revelstoke? Suit up and hit the water with Flexpeditions, an outdoor adventure company that takes you on hiking tours, rock climbing, paddling, or whitewater kayaking (from beginner to advanced).
The thing is, it’s important to remember that the level of fear matters, too. In an article for CBC, Stacey MacKinnon, associate professor of psychology in PEI, gives us this gentle reminder that, “people can feel and enjoy the fright more because they know they are safe.” What’s that mean for you, Romeo? It’s important to make sure they’re not deathly afraid of heights, or that they haven’t had a traumatizing accident on a mountain bike, before you go ahead and plan your big scary love fest.
Some activities that you might consider for the more timid amongst us are easy hikes to high peaks, gondola rides, or even a safe amusement park or water park. While bungee jumping in Whistler might be your vibe, you have to get to know your partner a little bit more before you ask them to jump 500 metres attached a rubber band for you.
As always, the key to planning a great date? Making sure you consider your partner’s feelings, too. We’re pretty convinced that some extreme dates are a good idea if you can add a little sprinkle of fear. The exhilaration might inspire your hot date to come in for a consoling hug before you know it.
