This Toronto Couple Waited 17 Years to Get Married and Their Favourite Jazz Lounge Was Worth the Wait

For more than two decades, The Reservoir Lounge has been part of Daniela and Michael’s love story. When they finally decided to say “I do,” there was only one place that felt right.

There are certain places in Toronto that become part of your story. Maybe it’s the restaurant where you had your first date, the bar where you spent countless Friday nights together, or that one spot you always find yourselves coming back to.

For Daniela and Michael, that place was The Reservoir Lounge.

Over more than 20 years, the downtown jazz lounge became a familiar setting for music, friendships and celebrations. Then, after a 17-year engagement, it became the setting for their wedding, too.

A Love Story More Than 20 Years in the Making

Daniela and Michael first discovered The Reservoir Lounge more than two decades ago. Drawn in by the live music and intimate atmosphere, they quickly became regulars.

They got to know the staff, formed friendships with musicians and celebrated milestones there. Over time, the lounge became their second home.

The couple eventually got engaged during a trip to Palm Springs. But they weren’t exactly in a rush to plan the wedding. In fact, they stayed engaged for 17 years.

Seventeen years!

When they finally decided to make it official, one decision was easy: they wanted to celebrate at the place that had already been part of so much of their relationship.

From Date Nights to Wedding Vows

Rather than booking a traditional wedding venue, Daniela and Michael chose The Reservoir Lounge. And personally, I love this idea.

Weddings often involve finding the perfect setting and trying to make every detail meaningful. There’s something especially romantic about choosing a place that already holds decades of memories.

On a Sunday evening, they exchanged vows on the lounge’s stage. Their celebration brought together elements of their Slovak, Catholic and Jewish backgrounds, reflecting the traditions that mattered to them.

Of course, music was part of the story. Two of their favourite Reservoir Lounge performers, Janice Hagan and Tory Cassis, performed for the occasion.

With help from staff who had known them for years, the venue was transformed for an evening that felt unmistakably personal. The people and music that had brought them back year after year were now part of their wedding day.

A Place to Call Your Own

Their story captures something I appreciate about having a favourite place to go together.

At datenight, we spend a lot of time sharing new restaurants, hidden gems and interesting things for couples to experience. Discovering somewhere new is always fun. But I think there’s something equally meaningful about finding a place you keep returning to.

A spot where the people begin to recognize you. Where you’ve celebrated birthdays and anniversaries, or simply had a really great Friday night. Where, years later, you can look around and remember the different chapters of your life.

It’s also a reminder of what independent music venues can mean to a city, connecting regulars, staff and performers. Daniela and Michael’s friendships at the lounge are part of what made their choice of wedding venue so personal.

For couples considering a night out, the appeal is easy to see: an intimate room, live music and time to enjoy an evening together. It could be a first date, an anniversary or a return to a place you already love.

Plan a Date Night at The Reservoir Lounge

Visit The Reservoir Lounge’s website for current performances, hours and reservation details before planning your evening.

For Daniela and Michael, years of nights out eventually led to wedding vows on the same stage where they had watched their favourite musicians perform. Your own next chapter might start with something as simple as making plans to go back.
